Zamak 3 and Zamak 5 are soft alloys that tend to smear rather than cut under excessive polishing pressure. Their die-cast skin conceals sub-surface porosity that can cause plating blisters if exposed. Additionally, parting-line flash removal must be performed without compromising part fixture stability. To meet retail quality standards, the substrate surface roughness must achieve Ra ≤ [TBC] µm—a consistency rarely maintained in manual polishing operations.
The LR-POLISH-HG-ZA is a high-gloss robotic faucet polishing machine specifically engineered for zinc alloy die-cast faucets. It targets GU (gloss unit) levels measured on the finished plated surface, ensuring consistent high-gloss quality from the first part to the last across every production shift.

While most polishing machines target Ra, the LR-POLISH-HG-ZA targets GU—the gloss unit measurement used by retail and hospitality buyers to specify "high-gloss chrome." The relationship between substrate Ra and finished chrome GU is non-linear and depends on multiple factors including chrome build thickness, polishing direction uniformity, smear-layer presence, and Zamak alloy grade. This system is calibrated against your specific plating house's chrome specifications.
Zamak alloys smear rather than cut under excessive force, creating a smear layer that causes haze under chrome plating even when Ra measurements appear correct. The LR-POLISH-HG-ZA employs a Zamak-specific force ceiling that maintains all polishing phases below the smear initiation threshold.
Phase F, the initial operation, handles flash removal on soft zinc alloy through three key design elements:
- Narrow abrasive disc ([TBC] mm wide): Contacts only the flash itself, not adjacent surfaces
- Zamak-safe force ceiling ([TBC] N): The minimum force required to shear Zamak flash without damaging adjacent cosmetic faces
- Edge-tracking path with approach-angle control: Disc approaches flash at [TBC]° to the parting-line plane for shearing rather than pressing
The system accommodates both Zamak 3 (softer, lower aluminum content) and Zamak 5 (slightly harder, higher aluminum content), adjusting polishing parameters to account for their different responses to polishing compounds.
High-gloss is defined as a specific GU (gloss unit) target, not a subjective description. The LR-POLISH-HG-ZA is configured to achieve a precise GU on the polished substrate, calibrated against your plating house's chrome build thickness to ensure the finished chrome meets your buyer's specifications. An in-line GU sensor after Phase G confirms this quality before parts proceed to the plating line.
Smear on Zamak results from excessive polishing force driving the soft zinc matrix over abrasive compound particles, creating a cold-worked layer that appears smooth in Ra measurements but causes haze under chrome plating. The solution involves implementing a Zamak-specific force ceiling that maintains all phases below the smear initiation threshold, combined with a Phase P1 soft-cotton smear-removal pass before pre-gloss and gloss stages. Phase F utilizes a narrow abrasive disc matched to your specific flash height, a Zamak-safe force ceiling, and a calculated approach angle designed to shear flash rather than press it into adjacent surfaces. We verify disc width and force ceiling parameters using your sample parts before finalizing the program, as flash geometry varies between casting tools.
